If you want to get involved and help the community learn more about the natural world around them and have a blast doing so - become a docent at the Tulsa Zoo, voted “America’s Favorite Zoo!”

Please note that we are not currently accepting new docents as we are working on updating the program. You’re still welcome to fill out an application as well as to get starting volunteering in another group and then sign up for the training as soon as it’s available.

 

What is a Docent?

Docents are trained volunteers who help to educate the general public about animal wildlife, ecosystems and conservation. Docents provide exciting information and enjoyable experiences to more than 100,000 children and adults each year!

 

What does a Docent volunteer do?

•Lead educational group tours

•Give off-site presentations

•Conduct workshops and classes

•Participate in special zoo events

•Give live animal presentations

•Setup biofact display carts

•Interpret wildlife, ecosystems and conservation to zoo visitors

 

What must I do to become a Docent?

Participate in an 8-week Basic Interpretive Training course.  Graduates will be trained to volunteer on grounds at interpretive stations.  After six months, docents may participate in additional training programs to learn to do off-site educational programs at schools, libraries and other organizations and to handle animals from our animal ambassador program.   A one-time training fee of $40 is required to cover material costs and your volunteer shirt. 

 

What are the requirements to be a Docent?

•Must be 18 years or older

•Able to volunteer at least 36 hours per year.

•Provide proof of a negative Tuberculosis test.

•Volunteer one day per week or one weekend day per month.

•Satisfactorily complete the 8-week training class.

•Stay current with program and exhibit information.

•Attend continuing education classes each year.

 

How do I join the Docent program?

•Meet with the Tulsa Zoo Education Staff

•Attend an 8-week Docent training course
