What is a ZooTeen?
ZooTeens are volunteers 15 -17 years of age who, after completing a series of instructional classes, assist zookeepers and Education Department staff during the summer.
What do ZooTeens do?
- Aid the animal care staff in exhibit maintenance and the general care and feeding of the zoo’s animal collection.
- Gain valuable work experience and increase their knowledge of zoo operations.
- Increase their understanding of the zoo's role in the conservation and preservation of wildlife and the environment.
What must I do to become a ZooTeen?Participate in a training program that begins in October and concludes in April. Classes meet at the Tulsa Zoo one afternoon each month. Applicants must be 15 years of age by the summer they begin volunteering. Applications are due by August 1st each year for the class to start that fall. Applicants will be required to attend a group interview scheduled during the month of August. Attendance is mandatory for those interested in the program.
Additional requirements:- Attend all training sessions and satisfactorily complete the quizzes and final examination
- Maintain a 2.5 grade point average
- Take an annual Tuberculosis test
- Purchase the required T-shirt (approximately $5)
- Pay yearly dues ($15 the first year and $10 each year after)
- Have a pair of sturdy shoes to leave at the zoo
- Maintain a neat appearance, good work habits, an interest in zoo operations and a sincere appreciation for life
How do I join ZooTeens?- Complete the volunteer application by August 1st of the year you wish to begin.
- Attend the mandatory group interview scheduled during the month of August.
