Keeping Up With Keepers is a program at the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum, sponsored by the Tulsa Chapter of the American Association Of Zookeepers (AAZK). This program is offered annually and all proceeds go directly to various wildlife and conservation organizations. The goal of this program is to educate the public to exactly what our zookeepers do at work everyday and to give them an inside look into a world not seen by many people. This is an exciting and fun opportunity for those who are interested in learning first hand about the importance of species conservation and the animal husbandry that takes place daily at the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum.
Your day will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Administration building (Employee entrance, southwest gate) for a short orientation. You will then be taken to your assigned area to meet the keeper of that area .The keeper will talk to you about the animals and answer any questions you may have as you work alongside with him/her through that portion of the morning routine. At 12:00 p.m. the keeper will take you back to the administration building for a brief summary and the chance to share your experiences with other participants.
BE PREPARED TO GET DIRTY. Please remember to wear work clothes and shoes. We also must ask you, in order to protect the zoo animals, to please avoid any contact with any animals you have at home on the day you come to the Zoo. Feel free to bring a camera!
- The cost of the program is $35.00 per person or $30.00 for Tulsa Zoo Friends members.
- Participants must be age 13 or older. Ages 13, 14, & 15 will observe only.
- All participants must test negative for TB before coming into close contact with any animals at the Tulsa Zoo.
- Test results must be turned in by the session or you will not be able to participate. TB test is inexpensive and can be given by your doctors office or at the Tulsa Health Dept. (usually $5 or free)
- Some aspects of your experience may be physically demanding. Therefore, please consider your present health status before applying.
