Zoo Conservation Outreach Group

Last year we supported two ZCOG projects:  The Andean Bear Program in Ecuador and southern Colombia, and Project Jaguar in Mexico.

Andean Bears. Tulsa Zoo provided funding to ZCOG’s Andean Bear Program focusing on field research, reintroduction, and conservation and monitoring designed to document and protect Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) populations in northern Ecuador, one of the most biodiverse regions on earth.

Project Jaguar. Tulsa Zoo provided funding to ZCOG’s Project Jaguar, which supports jaguar (Panthera onca) conservation, field research, and monitoring in the Los Chimalapas region of Oaxaca, Mexico. Associated community outreach initiatives in Los Chimalapas will help contribute to wildlife and habitat conservation in this biodiverse Mexican rainforest ecosystem.

Change=Change, Conservation Parking Meters. Have you seen the 2 “parking meters” on Zoo grounds?  There’s one in the Lowlands building near the coral reef exhibit and one near the exit of the Tropical American Rainforest building.  They may look out of place at a zoo, but they are actually very important to our conservation program.  All the money collected in the Conservation Meters goes directly to the Center for Ecosystem Survival.  The Tulsa Zoo has partnered with CES to protect rainforest habitat in the Pacaya-Samiria region of Peru and the coral reefs surrounding the island nation of Palau, Micronesia.  Drop a couple of coins in one of these meters and see how much “change” your spare change can make!
