Recycling

There are 25 green collection bins on Zoo grounds where guests are encouraged to deposit their empty plastic bottles and aluminum cans.  Recyclables are periodically collected and taken to our main collection site on grounds before they are transported to a recycling facility.  Our visitors save many acres of landfill space each year simply by choosing not to throw recyclable containers in the trash.

The Zoo’s recycling program is much larger than just plastic and aluminum.  In fact, 10 separate materials are collected and recycled on a large scale.  Below is some information on these programs, which also include batteries, wooden pallets, corrugated cardboard and ink cartridges.

Average amount of material recycled:
Plastic – 1,000 lbs. per month
Aluminum – 350 lbs. per month
Paper – 22,000 lbs. per year
Scrap Steel – 12,000 lbs. per year
Cell Phones – over 3,000 phones since 2006
Phone Books – 900 per year
