Welcome to the Tulsa Zoo Arctic Ambassador Center
Polar Bears International (PBI) declared 2008 the Year of the Polar Bear. The Tulsa Zoo has partnered with PBI and agreed to serve as an “Arctic Ambassador Center” to help educate people about polar bears and the arctic.
Recent studies concerning the shrinking sea ice in the Arctic and the declining numbers of polar bears have highlighted the importance of taking action to help promote the conservation of this unique species and its habitat. Click here to read more about polar bears and their conservation.
Activities:
A National Teen Contest called Project Polar Bear for teens ages 14-17. Local teens are invited to participate and be judged in the local contest. One team will be selected to go on to the semi-finals! If your team wins the semi-finals you could win a trip to see the Polar Bears in the wild! In 2010 there will be a summer contest (deadline to enter by June 1st) and a fall contest (deadline to enter by September 30th).
Participation in the 2008 and 2009 Leadership Camps. In 2008, a local high school student was selected to travel to Churchill in Manitoba Canada to work with scientists in the field. She collected data and reported back to her classmates via daily Web journals. In 2009, one of our Large Carnivore keepers participated in the Keeper Leadership Camp.
